Jazz star to headline new festival

Deniliquin’s newest event, the Deni Rhythm, Blues and Jazz Festival will feature Australia’s number one trumpet player James Morrison (pictured) as the headline act.

The event will be held Easter Sunday next year at the river-side Edward River Oval, with Morrison and his famous Quintet locked in to round out the day.

This will be the jazz star’s second local performance in recent times after he shocked music lovers in March with a surprise set at the Deniliquin Club.

A crowd had turned out to listen to rising Aussie jazz band The Swing Merchants, which features Morrison’s sons William and Harry, and the man himself made a surprise appearance.

Deniliquin RSL Club CEO David Hart, who is part of the event’s organising committee, said it was a huge coup to have such a well known artist on stage at the inaugural festival.

‘‘James Morrison is about as big as it gets in the Aussie jazz scene and we’re excited to have him coming to our first event,’’ Mr Hart said.

‘‘The festival will be just one part of what should be a massive Easter weekend in Deni, with art markets, local footy, art shows and a South West Music concert all planned.

‘‘We’re hoping locals will support the festival and invite along some friends and family for the weekend.

‘‘The festival won’t just be about jazz; it’s really a celebration of music and we’ll soon be announcing other activities.’’

Morrison is widely known for his incredible trumpet skills but also plays all four types of saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), clarinet, flugelhorn, bass trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, double bass, piano and guitar.

His recording career spans three decades and includes a variety of albums from gospel to big band and electronic fusion.

Morrison’s variety of repertoire saw him inducted into the Australian Jazz Hall of Fame in 2013.

Tickets for the Deni Rhythm, Blues and Jazz Festival will be available in about a fortnight and are $42 for adults, $22 for children aged three to 15 years, and free for under three. A family ticket for two adults and two children will be $95.
