Drovers head to Wagga

Drovers full-back Nathan Holahan will be a key player for his side tomorrow.

Deni Drovers will travel to Kapooka Army Base to take on McMullen Cup reigning premier Wagga Waratahs tomorrow afternoon.

The last time these sides met was in last year’s preliminary final with the Waratahs ending the Drovers’ season with a 22-10 win.

Deni coach Joe Gogarty is hoping his charges can use that loss to inspire them to victory.

‘‘I’m expecting a much better effort from the boys this week,’’ he said.

‘‘Last week’s efforts weren’t so good so hopefully the pain that the Waratahs caused us last year will spark us up a bit.

‘‘They won premierships in all grades last year so we’re in for a tough day.

‘‘We’re just glad to be playing a game for a second straight week.

‘‘Hopefully this will help us get some consistency in our performance and we can put together a solid team effort.’’

If going up against the reigning premiers wasn’t hard enough, the task at hand will be made even tougher with the Drovers having centres Tyler Amor-Beale and Reed Jackson, props Ben Howitt and Tom Clarke, and experienced forward Les Dicker all coming out of the side.

But Gogarty is confident he can fill the gaps.

‘‘We had five players playing for CSU last week so they’ll slot right into the line-up,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ll have to switch some positions up but we should be okay.

‘‘I’ll be training some players in new positions on Thursday (last night).

‘‘With so many outs though it will mean that some of our players who aren’t used to playing a full game won’t be leaving the field.

‘‘Sometimes that can work in your favour though so hopefully they make the most of their opportunity of more game time.’’
