With a win at the Finley Show earlier this month highlighting the quality of Merrengreen’s Poll Dorset rams, stud owner Duncan Carmichael is expecting strong interest at his annual ram sale next week.
There will be 80 Poll Dorset rams offered at the on-property sale on Wednesday, September 20 — on Casey’s Rd, which is 12km from Finley and 10km from Berrigan.
Mr Carmichael, who runs the stud with wife Judi, said inspections will be from 10am, with the sale from 1pm.
Merrengreen claimed the hotly contested Jeff Close Memorial Pen of Three Poll Dorset Flock Rams category at the Finley Show.
Mr Carmichael said it was a testament to the high quality of his rams, which he said are ‘‘paddock-ready and fresh for sale’’.
‘‘The rams are looking very good — they’re the best quality we’ve had for a while,’’ he said.
‘‘They have all been vaccinated, plunge dipped and are in good health and ready to go.’’
The rams are footrot free and have been Gudair and OJD Vaccinated.
The Carmichaels established the Merrengreen stud after relocating from Gippsland 19 years ago,
Mr Carmichael has been operating and continually improving the genetics of Merrengreen Poll Dorset Stud since its establishment.
‘‘This has included building superior genetics from studs such as ‘Kurralea’, ‘Aberdeen’ and ‘Newbold’ to produce high, even quality and consistency throughout his flock,’’ Mr Carmichael’s daughter Tessa McNamara said.
‘‘Merrengreen rams are long-bodied, early maturing, clean faced rams, being raised primarily on pasture and hay prior to sale.
‘‘Dad has a strong belief in producing ‘paddock ready’ rams, ideal for the current, strong priced lamb market.’’
