Nominations for Edward River Council’s 2018 Australia Day Awards are now open.

Mayor Norm Brennan said the awards present an opportunity for residents and community groups to be recognised for their outstanding achievements and service to our community.

“Council’s Australia Day Awards provide us with an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the many unsung heroes within our community; residents and community groups who work tirelessly to make the Edward River region even better,” he said.

“We often underestimate the dedication and sense of civic pride of everyday people living in our community, and these awards are a great way to recognise their achievements and service.

“We all know someone who inspires us — a neighbour, colleague, family member or friend — who goes above and beyond in giving back to our community, so I encourage all residents to take the time to nominate them for an award.” Council will present awards in eight categories, which include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event or Group of the Year, Senior Arts and Culture Award, Junior Arts and Culture Award, Senior Sports Award, Junior Sports Award and the Bill Hermiston Memorial Landcare Award.

Nominations close Friday, November 17, and award winners will be announced at Council’s Australia Day celebration, to be held on January 26 next year.
