Mitre 10 scrape home against the Battlers

Mitre 10 continued their rise up the table by recording a close win over Taskers Battlers/Elders nine sets 98 games to eight sets 94 games in Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club’s spring competition on Saturday.

Mitre 10’s top three men Tom Wettenhall, Peter Rae and Alex Romanin all stepped up to win three sets.

Taskers Battlers also had three players who recorded three set wins, with Kai Romanin, Ryan Butcher and Tessa Bulmer all unbeaten on Saturday.

The win moves Mitre 10 closer to Taskers on the ladder, with Taskers having premiership 46 points and Mitre 10 are on 40.

Taskers, while losing on the day, will still take confidence from their close defeat as their top two men and their top lady were unavailable to play.

In contrast, the other match saw Agspares put on a strong performance to outplay Peppin Planners 12 sets 110 games to five sets 92 games.

While there were three tie-breaker sets, two went the way of Agspares.

Jenny Hogan, Michael Williams and Megan Baker were all three set winners for Agspares.

It was a complete victory for the strong Agspares team winning five of the seven men’s sets, four of the five ladies’ sets and three of the four mixed sets.

The table after five rounds sees Agspares/Legal Eagles leading on 62 points, Taskers Battlers/Elders 46 points, Mitre 10 third on 42 points and Peppin Planners/TA Maher last on 40 points with five weeks remaining.

Only the first and second placed teams will progress to the grand final.

During the week there will be no access to the lawn courts as the Croquet Golf Handicap National Titles are on at the club until Friday.

Saturday play will be as normal when Mitre 10 play top placed team AgSpares and Taskers take on Peppin Planners.
