St Michael’s School Deniliquin tasted success at the Southern Cluster Brain Olympia held recently in Hay.

Competing against Hillston, Hay and Balranald, the school’s Year 5/6 Brain Olympians took out first place while the Year 3/4 team came second.

The day consisted of five sections including a general knowledge quiz, maths problem solving, public speaking and drama.

The quiz and problem solving put up some extremely challenging questions, but both local teams scored well with Year 5/6 taking the lead in the problem solving section.

Both teams presented a different angle on the public speaking topic, ‘Our Town’, with the Year 3/4 team writing a speech highlighting the best of Deniliquin, while the Year 5/6 team created a poem based on the fictional town Boomeroo.

Both St Michael’s teams won this section.

For the final section, the students had to create a play which concluded with a specific line. The 3/4 team was given the line ‘‘they’re coming’’ and 5/6 were given ‘‘get out of here’’.

Two very entertaining skits were created with St Michael’s 3/4 team coming equal second and the 5/6 team once again earning first place.
