There were 50,766 runners to finish the famous New York City Marathon this year, and among that group was Deniliquin couple Lee and Amy Holloway.
The couple successfully tackled the 42km run through the five boroughs of New York City — Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem and Manhattan — finishing in Central Park on Sunday.
Lee said running the event with his wife was an amazing experience.
‘‘It’s been a big lead up in our household,’’ he said.
‘‘This was my fifth marathon but it was my first time in the New York marathon.
‘‘It was Amy’s first marathon, so it was awesome to do it together.
‘‘She had a really good run and was ecstatic.
‘‘I ran terribly due to an old knee injury but the New York marathon is still an incredible experience.
‘‘The best way to describe it is a 42 kilometre street party with crowds, parties and bands on the streets everywhere.’’
The couple travelled over for the event with their 21 month-old daughter Meg, along with Amy’s mother and brother, Lisa and Patrick Connell.
‘‘We had a great support squad with Meg, Lisa and Patrick,’’ Lee said.
‘‘We’re staying in New York for another week to sightsee and rehydrate with some Budweisers after finishing the marathon.
‘‘We’ve been to two National Hockey League games and will be going to an NBA game on Monday. It’s Lebron (James) and the Cavs facing the Knicks (National Basketball League), so I’m quite excited about that.’’
