Deniliquin’s Elena Mulham will represent NSW at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide next week.
Elena leaves for the carnival tomorrow, where she will compete in the 12 years’ girls’ shot put and discus events.
The 12 year-old will be up against athletes from around the country, as well as New Zealand, China, Philippines, India and Fiji.
The Deniliquin North Public School student says she’s looking forward to competing in shot put on Monday and then discus on Tuesday.
‘‘I’ve been training two to four times a week,’’ Elena said.
‘‘I’m really excited because I get to meet new people and it’s always a friendly atmosphere.
‘‘My main goal is to set new personal bests.’’
On her way to qualifying for the Games, Elena had a tremendous performance at the PSSA State Athletics carnival in Sydney, taking home two silver medals.
She finished second in discus and shot put, throwing an impressive 36.41m and 10.32m respectively, and both were personal bests.
This effort also saw Elena claim the Riverina Medal for the leading Riverina athlete at the state carnival.
Elena has been coached by Deniliquin-based Riverina athletics team manager Sarah Young in the lead-up to the Games.
‘‘Sarah’s helped me a lot so I’d like to thank her for preparing me for this.’’
