A car which had caught fire on the Cobb Highway near Booroorban on Friday night had the flames extinguished by the rain, according to authorities.

Booroobran Rural Fire Service volunteer firefighters were called to the highway location, just north of the Booroorban Hotel, about 7.20pm.

Believed to have been caused by a mechanical fault, Mid Murray Zone RFS district assistant Terry Campbell said the fire was contained by the time firefighters arrived, due to the deluge.

There was significant damage to the car however no injuries were reported, according to the RFS.
