Kate’s furniture a feature of art show

January 07, 2018

Berrigan-based furniture designer Kate Small will be the feature artist at this year’s Rotary Easter Art Show.

Miss Small, originally from Deniliquin, graduated from a Certificate IV in fine furniture making at Sturt School for Wood in Mittagong, near Sydney, in December 2016.

Originally studying architecture and graphic design, Miss Small instead sought something more ‘‘hands-on’’ that would allow her to work with natural materials.

‘‘Growing up on a farm at Deniliquin I was fortunate to be surrounded by nature and the environment, which are two major influences on my work,’’ she said.

‘‘From a young age I had a passion and interest in art and design and experimented with many mediums.

‘‘Post-high school studies in graphic design and an introductory furniture making course led me to Sturt School of Wood.

‘‘Sturt awakened my passion and appreciation for the craft as well as evolving my design skills and expanding my knowledge of woodworking.

‘‘My love for rural Australia has brought me back to the country, where I am currently starting up my business in Berrigan.

‘‘I plan to start exploring and incorporating a range of mediums into my future woodwork.’’

Miss Small will showcase some of her recent designs at the art show, which she said was on her annual ‘do to’ list while growing up in Deniliquin.

‘‘I went to the Rotary Easter Art Show every year, and I always loved it.

‘‘Art was always one of my favourite subjects at school, and it’s nice that Deniliquin does something to showcase artists every year.’’

The 26th annual Rotary Easter Art Exhibition will be held in the Deniliquin High School’s multi-purpose centre throughout the Easter long weekend.

The exhibition will be open from midday to 4pm on Good Friday, March 30, and from 10am to 5pm on both Easter Saturday and Sunday. On Easter Monday, opening hours are from 10am to 2.30pm.

The total prize pool of this year’s art show is $12,300, which includes three acquisitive prizes valued at a combined $3,750.

Artworks can be submitted up to March 2, 2018. For more information on how to enter, or to receive an entry form, contact Chris Whitehouse on (03)58818985 or email [email protected]
