Holiday makers are being warned to take necessary precautions when lighting a campfire this season.
It comes after an escaped campfire burnt 2.5 hectares of grassland at Old Morago on New Year’s Eve.
NSW Rural Fire Service district officer Phil Brunsdon said the fire escaped into the adjacent forest between 2pm and 3pm, with three firefighters from the Denimein and Brassi brigades quickly containing the blaze.
Mr Brunsdon said escaped campfires can ben prevented by ensuring there is an adequate clearing around the fire.
He said there must also be a source of water nearby to extinguish any flames, and spreading dirt or sand over the fire is not always a reliable method to extinguish a fire.
