A new peer discussion group for parents, family members and friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) people is being launched in Deniliquin.
Intereach CEO Keryn Fox said the group, organised by Intereach Ability Links, aims to offer support, information and understanding in a relaxed and positive environment.
‘‘Many LGBTIQ people still experience discrimination, abuse, exclusion and prejudice and this can also impact on their family and friends,’’ she said.
‘‘People can have a variety of reactions to the news that their loved one identifies as LGBTIQ.
‘‘Some are immediately accepting but others can feel shocked and alone or even fearful for their loved one’s future.
‘‘That’s why groups like this are so important. This group will provide a safe, friendly place where people can talk freely and openly and offer understanding and support as they address the issues that arise for them and their loved ones,’’ Ms Fox said.
All meeting discussions will remain confidential to participants and the privacy of participants will always be respected.
Bookings are not necessary and people are welcome to simply turn up on the night.
Th first meeting will be held Monday, January 29 at the South West Arts office in End St, Deniliquin (former Conargo Shire office building).
