Cobram-Yarroweyah United broke through for their first win of the Murray Valley Cricket Association season on Saturday, taking down Waaia at Cobram.

The visitors had declared early at 5-138 on day one in search of an outright win to keep their finals hopes alive, but the decision backfired as United confidently tracked down the total for first innings points.

Resuming at 0-31, Kieran Andrew’s contribution of 54 was huge, topped only by Harry Ukich’s 64 not out as United took 57 overs to post 203.

Matthew Stuart was Waaia’s best with the ball taking 4-50.

In a second innings, Waaia again scored quickly but regularly lost wickets to a strong spell of bowling from William Robertshaw (5-44).

Mitchell Cleeland (61) and Brayden Carey (52) made the bulk of the runs as they finished at 8-133.

At Nathalia, the hosts pulled off a remarkable comeback to defend their total of 91 from the week before.

Cobram started the second day at 2-18, but could not handle the deadly Purples’ bowling attack.

They struck early, with James Daniel (2), Manuele Artavilla (1) and Adam Decicco all dismissed early to leave Cobram 5-25.

The Nathalia bowling was suffocating, particularly from Luke Carter and Luke Quinn who from a combined 52 overs bowled 33 maidens, and took 5-42.

Cobram’s Jonathan Fearn made 31 and steered the side within sight of the victory, but his side was eventually all out for 81.

Nathalia had a second innings and made 7-133 in 36 overs.

Quinn (44) and Scott Morris (39) did most of the scoring.
