A hat-trick from paceman Chris Baines helped Deniliquin Rhinos’ Division One team secure a comfortable win over Cobram on Saturday at Memorial Park.
The opening bowler took the hat-trick in his third over and it effectively ended Cobram’s innings. The Tigers were already struggling at 2/8 when Baines worked his magic.
The visitors were bowled out for just 35 in reply to Deni’s 8/124.
‘‘It felt good,’’ Baines said of the rare feat.
‘‘It was my first hat-trick.
‘‘The first batsman skied one from a rubbish delivery,’’ Baines said with a laugh.
‘‘The second (batsman) was caught behind and the hat-trick ball was plumb LBW on a fuller delivery.’’
Baines finished with fine figures of 4/6 from eight overs, including five maidens, and also chipped in with a handy 11 runs with the bat.
The day started slowly for the Rhinos with Mitch Jefferies falling for a duck, and Chris Pyle and Phil Rotherham soon following.
A handy 20 from veteran Tim Hillier helped Deniliquin rebuild their innings, while Oliver Draffin, in his first game of the season, looked solid with the willow before a direct-hit run-out had him on his way for 11. The Rhinos were 5/54.
A 48-run partnership between captain Jack Tonta and teenager Harry Hillier helped the Rhinos pass the 100 mark to eventually finish on 8/124 from their 40 overs.
Hillier was especially impressive, hitting a four and a six in his unbeaten 36.
The best of the bowlers for Cobram was Darcy McCormack with 2/12 from his eight overs.
Cobram’s innings was in trouble early when Ben Irwin took two wickets in the third over, including bowling opener Brett Gallagher for five to have Cobram 2/6.
After Baines’s hat-trick, line and length bowler Tim Hillier took his first wicket and the Cobram innings was in shambles at 6/9.
The only Cobram batsman to defy the bowlers was Tarkyn Hyde who scored 15, however his innings came to an end when bowled by spinner Tonta.
Cobram was bowled all out for 35 from 25.2 overs.
The Division One Rhinos are sixth on the ladder with three rounds to go in the home and away season.
Next week the Deni side travels to play fourth placed Nathalia.
