About 100 people are expected at a local police reunion this weekend, most of them former officers who were stationed at Deniliquin at some stage during their careers.

The informal reunion weekend includes the unveiling of a police memorial wall at the new Deniliquin Police Station in Charlotte St on Saturday morning.

Some family members of police officers who have since passed away are also expected to return for the reunion.

The weekend is being coordinated by former police officer Roger Smith, who relocated back to Deniliquin in 2004 when he retired from the force, with assistance from Deniliquin Police Local Area Commander Superintendent Paul Condon and his team.

Supt Condon said while the unveiling of the memorial wall is a public event, he said attendance may need to be limited to those involved in the reunion due to space restrictions at the site.

Supt Condon and Police Chaplain Reverend Wayne Sheean will perform the unveiling at 10am on Saturday.

‘‘The general public are welcome, but with 100 past police expected at the event we may be pushed for room.

‘‘However, the general public are welcome to come and see the wall at any time.

‘‘The wall is a real showpiece for the new station.’’

Mr Smith, who was stationed in Deniliquin during the 1970s and again in the 1980s, said the completion of the new police station was the impetus for the event.

He said there are officers returning who were stationed in Deniliquin a long time ago, and others who were here more recently.

‘‘The feedback we’ve received from people was that had a great time when they were in Deniliquin and they have very fond memories of their time here.

‘‘We are very pleased at the number of people returning, but unfortunately there are others who are not able to.’’

The police reunion day will start with the dedication of the memorial wall on Saturday, after which reunion guests will be given a guided tour of the new police station.

After lunch guests will have a few hours to rediscover the local area before meeting at the Deniliquin Golf Club from 4pm for a ‘mix and mingle’ dinner evening.

Anyone requiring more information about the event is asked to contact Mr Smith on 58812241.
