After claiming the Champion Angler trophy at last year’s event, Deniliquin’s Colin Brown has confirmed he will be back to defend his title at this weekend’s Deniliquin RSL Iron Jack Fishing Classic.
Last year Mr Brown reeled in a 95cm cod on a lure to win the Classic’s trophy for the biggest native catch.
He’ll be looking for a similar result using the same tactics this year.
‘‘Dragging a lure was the trick (last year),’’ he said.
‘‘I wouldn’t have a clue how I’m going to go this year, but the best way to catch a fish is to just put a hook in the water.
‘‘It’s good to be out on the water with your mates.
‘‘It (the Classic) is a good weekend out — it’s a well run event.’’
Last year’s trophy-winning catch was one of two legal sized cod the champion angler caught during the fishing competition — the other measuring 50cm.
‘‘It took me about 15 minutes to reel him (the 95cm cod) in; he was a fighter. I was a bit nervous because of the size of him,’’ Mr Brown recalled.
