He cited council’s November report on the matter from director infrastructure Oliver McNulty which said, ‘‘In December 2016 council contacted the RSPCA requesting that they come to Deniliquin to assess the birds’ welfare. An RSPCA officer attended the enclosure and advised that the birds were in good health and, in his opinion, were housed in an adequate environment’’.

Cr Brennan said part of the recommendation carried yesterday was to allocate $40,000 in capital funding to the removal of the aviary.

The recommendation also instructs council to form a Friends of the Peacocks committee, which will explore all the options available in re-homing the birds.

‘‘People with a genuine concern will have the ability to provide some input,’’ Cr Brennan said.

‘‘Council will also continue to consult with the Department of Primary Industries.’’

Council expects to call for expressions of interest in joining the Friends of the Peacock committee soon.
