Golf is a great game, and beginners are being given the opportunity to learn how it is played thanks to dedicated Deniliquin Golf Club members.
Junior clinics start this afternoon at 4pm and this round will run for five weeks (excluding Good Friday).
Adult clinics are held at 9.30am on Sunday and are a great way to get your golf introduction.
For details phone the club, or just turn-up to the clinic where all the necessary equipment will be available.
On the course, last Saturday was a stableford event won in A grade by Dean Irwin with 39 points, from Colin Steddy on 37. B grade winner was Greg Collins with 39, a shot clear of Bob Landy 38, and in C grade Robert Campbell had the popular winning score of 39 from runner-up Greg Bulmer 38.
It seems ‘Moot’ had one of the shortest rounds on record, retiring in stitches (or should that be out of stitches?) on the first hole.
And who is the once regular golfer who decided fishing was a better option, but is perhaps having second thoughts after the boat had an unfortunate encounter with the ramp? Seems the skipper discovered a leaking boat doesn’t help you catch too many fish.
On Wednesday the A grade winner was Mark O’Brien with 40 points, a shot clear of Mick Lyne on 39. In B grade Ken Pearce had 39, defeating Geoff ‘Zorro’ Bessell on 38.
The first of the new Monday veterans’ competition was played last week and had good support. The 18 holes event was won by Noel Nicholas with 39 points, from Alan Higgins on 37. The nine holes event was won by Bev Purtill with 23. The next round for the veterans will be on Monday, March 19.
Tomorrow is the Deniliquin Freighters Monthly Medal. Next weekend is the Autumn Classic, so if you don’t have a partner and your entry organised, get cracking. The following Sunday is the Deniliquin Open, and the Sunday after is the St Michael’s Holey Hit-out, so there will be plenty of action on the course this month.
In the clubhouse, congratulations to Neil Boswell, a long-time dedicated club member who won the $6,800 Joker’s Wild jackpot last Friday night. It was a popular win, even though many would have liked the jackpot to keep soaring.
Although the jackpot may be a little lower from tonight, the Friday night fun continues and the club would love to see the great crowds do likewise. Meals are available and bookings are preferred.
On Sunday the club is partnering with South West Music to host Swing on the Grass. Bring your own chair or blanket, sit back and enjoy the great music. There will be a sausage sizzle, limited bar snacks and the bar open. Tickets are $30 and available from South West Music or at the club.
