Bede Orr, Jaycob Clarke and Jessica Dover competed at the NSW State Championships.

Three local athletes proudly represented the Deniliquin Athletic Club in Sydney at the recent NSW State Championships.

Jessica Dover, Bede Orr and Jaycob Clarke competed in various track and field disciplines over the three-day event.

Jaycob, who has had a mild case of cerebral palsy since birth, flew the Deni flag proudly with plenty of new personal bests, finishing second in 800m and long jump, third in discus and fourth in 100m in the U15-U17 boys Multi Class section.

Athletic Club president Leanne Mulham said she was proud of Jaycob’s efforts.

‘‘Jaycob is our senior athlete and has been an inspiration for all our club members for many years,’’ Mulham said.

‘‘His achievements highlight that Little Athletics can provide pathways for everyone no matter what your abilities.

‘‘Jaycob had previously competed at the State Championships, but this year was his first opportunity to be vying for medals as his grading assessment was finalised before the event.

‘‘To come home with two silver medals and a bronze is an outstanding achievement.’’

Jessica and Bede both qualified for the state event after strong performances at the Regional Championships in Wollongong, with top two finishes automatically qualifying them for the state titles.

In Wollongong, Jessica won the U11 girls shot put and Bede won the U11 boys discus and javelin and finished second in shot put.

Jessica recorded a PB of 8.47m in shot put at the state title event, but unfortunately wasn’t able to place for a medal.

Mulham said both Jessica and Bede did the club proud in Sydney.

‘‘Jess only joined our club this season, where she has had the chance to learn other events like hurdles, javelin and triple jump.

‘‘It was in the shot put that she excelled, improving her throws by over one metre over the past six months to finish first at Regional Championships.

‘‘Bede has been a member of Deniliquin Athletic Club for well over four years. It’s been fantastic watching Bede progress over the years and his commitment to doing his very best.

‘‘Deniliquin Athletic Club is so proud to have three athletes representing the club (at state level).

‘‘We thank both the athletes and their parents for making this commitment.’’
