Mathoura midcourter Jameena Jackson leaps high to catch a pass in B grade.

It has been one year, eight months, and 17 days since Mathoura’s netballers have had reason to sing the club song.

But the long awaited day finally came when Mathoura beat Berrigan 56-49 on Saturday in front of their home fans.

The side went all of last season without a win, and all the way back to the end of the 2016 season where the team defeated Yarroweyah by a narrow four goals on August 6.

Mathoura head coach Kat Wippel said her side could not have been more happy at the final siren.

‘‘It was A grade’s first win in two years for the club. We drew one game last year but before that we haven’t won in two years.

‘‘The girls just loved it — they were up and about after it, that’s for sure,’’ she said.

Wippel said her side deserved to win the match after getting off to a flying start and leaving their opponents in the dust.

‘‘We kind of just got off to a good start and managed to hold the lead for the rest of the match.

‘‘We didn’t really make any changes from last week, we knew that the talent was there last week, but we needed to gel to make it all come together, and this week they gelled on court well,’’ she said.

The head coach credited players all over the court for the win, and picked three in particular for their tireless efforts on the day.

‘‘Casey Parfitt in centre never gave up, while Shanaye Hales and Rach Kelly, who played as goal-keep on the day just worked tirelessly.

‘‘Our shooters worked well too, Em and Shan. They were pretty accurate all day yesterday (Saturday),’’ she said.
