Life-changing experience for young leader

By Olivia Duffey

After a week long trip to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Deniliquin’s Elle Parsons is ready to lead in life, work and her community.

The Deniliquin Rotary Club was able to send one local young person to this year’s camp which took place at Malmsbury in Victoria, and Miss Parsons was accepted.

She said the experience had been ‘‘life changing’’.

‘‘I came back with a new fresh perspective,’’ she said.

‘‘For me, I have been able to focus a lot on personal development and goal setting while also concentrating on leadership fundamentals.

‘‘We did a lot of teamwork, problem solving, communication, self management and plenty more which I think has been really valuable.

‘‘There is always something you can improve on.’’

Miss Parsons’ day started at 7am and finished at 11pm and she said while it was exhausting, she learnt a lot.

‘‘The whole experience was incredible and enriching but a part of that was meeting people from all over the place,’’ she said.

‘‘We had people attend from the city, the country and the cultures and diversity was so vast.

‘‘We are all keeping in contact with  each other through social media to continue the learning experience and seeing what the camp has helped us do in our own communities around Australia.’’

Part of the camp involves becoming involved in community projects at home.

‘‘The first project I am going to be involved in is Deniliquin Rotary’s Busy Feet program for young people with disabilities,’’ she said.

‘‘I am looking forward to making connections, particularly with our local youth and supporting our community and everyone in it.

‘‘I learnt a lot about what Rotary does that people don’t actually know about and I hope to become a part of that and help my community.’’

Miss Parsons said anyone interested in attending next year’s camp is welcome to talk to her about her experience.

‘‘I am grateful to Deniliquin Rotary for this experience and absolutely recommend applying next year to attend the camp.’’
