It was a diverse audience of about 150 people who welcomed Air Marshal Davies back to the area where he grew up, completed his secondary schooling and learned the basics of flying aeroplanes.
In addition to those who went to school with him, shared a love of flying or had service in the Australian Defence Force, there were more than 30 students and Air Force Cadets present. In the words of Air Marshal Davies “one day, one of you could be the Chief of Air Force”.
The audience was captivated as he showed the current airborne capability of the RAAF and explained how technology makes them “smart” – including being pilot-less.
There was more of his inspiration for the next generation when he explained that a mid-air refuelling innovation came from the suggestion of a Corporal, and that this is the way of the future – everybody will have the opportunity to have their ideas heard and tried.
He also challenged the students to consider if their dream job might in fact be able to be done as a member of the RAAF.
After question time Air Marshal Davies had the honour of presenting a ‘First Solo Flight’ pin to SGT Chloe Schwarz from Australian Air Force Cadet SQN 419 (based in Shepparton).
Air Marshal Davies showed a promotional video prepared for the lead-up to the RAAF centenary in 2021, which showed how planes have changed.
He then invited all students and cadets to join him for a group photo, before handing out RAAF mementos and taking the time to talk to the students and answering their questions.
Cobram Barooga RSL president Rob Brown thanked John Williams and Allan Davies for their assistance in getting the event to fruition.
Mr Williams was Air Marshal Davies’ first flying instructor and Allan Davies is his proud father.
Mr Brown also thanked the Moira Shire for its financial assistance towards the evening.
He also gave a huge thank you to Air Marshal Davies and his wife Rhonda for making the time to visit and give so generously of his time to encourage a new generation of members of what he envisages will be a more integrated Australian Defence Force – all the while hoping they will choose to wear the blue uniform of the RAAF.
