That is the warning issued by Murray River Police District, after some officers have seen children being left in cars this summer.
Deniliquin officer in charge Detective Inspector Jy Brown said with temperatures in excess of 40°C predicted to continue next week, leaving people or animals in cars can be fatal.
‘‘Car inside temperatures rise, causing distress to children, animals and adults ... or worse,’’ he said.
‘‘If anyone observes these behaviours, they need to contact emergency services and render assistance immediately.’’
Det Insp Brown said the heatwave is also causing many locals and visitors to commit other offences, including leaving unsecured cars unattended.
‘‘We have seen people with their car windows down or the vehicle running, and we would just like to remind people that it is not only a criminal offence, but makes them susceptible to a crime.
‘‘The penalty for vehicle security offences is $112.
‘‘Police can take action against any individual who leaves any vehicle unsecured.
‘‘This may be under the Crimes Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act or the Child Protection Act and severe penalties can apply,’’ Det Insp Brown said.
