It was the Year 9 student’s first activity in her pursuit of a Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Jaye, who lives at Wanganella, helped with a number of different things throughout the four hour event. She started the day handing out free balloons to all the young children.
Supporting the 14 year-old on the day was P&A Society member and Jaye’s appointed mentor Lyn Rose.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a structured (non-formal education) youth development program, empowering young Australians between ages 14 to 25 to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance.
‘‘I volunteered to do the program, but the school picks Year 9’s to take part,’’ Jaye said.
‘‘I wanted to do it because I thought it would be a good experience.’’

Celebrating women in business
In today’s edition the Pastoral Times launches a new feature series that celebrates the women who help make our local business community so vibrant.
The new feature, which will run in every edition until the end of the month, is an extension of International Women’s Day celebrations that were so enthusiastically supported.
Four women in business will be featured in each edition, and asked to answer a series of questions.
Among the first four women to be profiled in today’s edition is our own business manager Leesa Muir, who started in the role early this year.
You can learn more about Leesa, Karen O’Brien, Hope Spalding and Susie Stafford on page 11.
Birthday surprise
Deniliquin’s Mary Moraldo was brought to tears on Saturday when her family threw her a surprise 70th birthday luncheon at the Exchange Hotel.
And the surprises kept coming for the guest of honour, who was brought to tears again when the Pastoral Times arrived to capture some photos of the special day.
‘‘I just thought I was coming to have lunch with my granddaughter (Jaye Gardner),’’ Mary exclaimed to the PT.
‘‘I was so surprised; I did not expect it.’’
Family members travelled from Queensland just to be with Mary at the celebration. Her actual birthday was March 11.
Photos from Mary’s party will appear in Friday’s edition.
Drastic action
The discontent in representation from NSW Coalition Government, and Nationals’ Member Austin Evans, has manifested itself into desperate acts from some local residents.
Several of Mr Evans’ election posters have been targeted in local protest.
Some were stolen from outside the pre-polling booths at the Multi Arts Centre in Deniliquin.
Others have been victim to graffiti, with a speech bubble quoting ‘I don’t need Deniliquin’ written on several, and a few have even been turned upside down.
A disappointed Mr Evans wants to remind people that it is an offence to tamper with election material.
We too want to encourage people to express their views in an appropriate manner, without resorting to vandalism.
