The woman said she heard a loud noise at the back of her south Deniliquin home about 1am.
A short time later, the door of the room she was in swung open and she saw a man standing in the doorway.
Seemingly surprised to find the woman at home, the intruder fled.
When police arrived to investigate, they found the rear door had been forced open.
Police are appealing for any information regarding the break-in, and described the male seen inside the home as a Caucasian male wearing a black beanie, pants and shirt.

Damage charge
A 54 year-old Deniliquin man has been charged with malicious damage after allegedly punching a hole in the laundry wall of a south Deniliquin home.
Police said it occurred after an argument between the man and a woman escalated, about 10pm Sunday.
The woman left the home to seek help and call police.
Police said the man will also be issued with an apprehended violence order.
Fuel stolen
Police are investigating the theft of about 200 litres of diesel fuel from a Blighty property. The fuel was siphoned from a farm tank.
Bike recovered
Police have recovered a pushbike stolen from a north Deniliquin home late last week.
The bike was left in the carport of the home at 11.30am on Friday, and was discovered missing about 7.45am Saturday.
A helmet left alongside the bike was also missing.
Both the bike and helmet were later found a few blocks away from the home.
