It’s also great to see so many families enjoying the Edward River and spending quality time fishing.
With fishing there’s plenty of highs and lows as any fisher-person would know, whether it being just netting a fish before the hook falls out, landing that catch of a lifetime only just hooked in the lip to having a fish get off just beside the boat, losing that trophy fish due to being snagged up or watching a cod over a metre try to engulf your surface lure only to see the lure surface soon after the strike.
Well that’s fishing and good things happen to those who are patient and are willing to persist.
For a few local lads their patience has been rewarded with some great catches.
Jack Woodcock caught some nice cod casting lures and spinnerbaits around the timber with a 72cm and a personal best of 81cm caught downstream from the Deniliquin Boat Club.
Tim Rose got in on the surface action with a nice 66cm cod, while Jye Patten and his partner Amber Lundy caught a healthy 91cm specimen using yabbies near Benarca Bend.
Tim Maher, Mark ‘Macca’ McDonald, Louis Grimison and Tim Brown also caught some nice cod either casting or trolling lures being the best option, and not to forget young Cam Wills landed a solid 50cm yellowbelly caught in the Billabong Creek using yabbies.
There have also been a couple of special father:son moments shared over the past weekend with Mathew Way and his son Harry casting lures in the Wakool River. Harry caught an absolute beast of a cod coming in at 108cm; well done Harry.
More joy was had with father and son combination Scott and Darcy Nilsson. Darcy caught his personal best cod to date trolling a 90mm AC Invader, with his cod measuring in at 70cm.
It was also good to see the girls getting involved with Ian Fisher taking the time to teach his daughter Georgia how to cast lures from the kayak.
Georgia was lucky enough to land a healthy 52cm cod; great effort Georgia.
Looking forward, hopefully the water levels will stay steady and the water will clear up even more, making conditions ideal for those who use lures and are eagerly waiting for the chance to get out and test their skills casting for that fish of a lifetime.
For those looking for something to do this weekend head out to the Wakool Fishing Comp with plenty of prizes and great entertainment. It should be a blast.
Keep your hooks sharp and be patient. Happy fishing.
