Forest bike trail officially opened

The new Murray Valley Regional Park mountain bike trail was officially opened on Thursday afternoon.

Edward River Council Mayor Norm Brennan, helped by Deniliquin High School students Duncan Hughes and Jack Michael, cut the ribbon for the official opening of the track, which is already being utilised by locals.

Cr Brennan said the project had been several years in the making and had the potential to attract riders of all levels and abilities and to provide the region with a valuable land-based experience which would appeal to the growing adventure tourism market.

‘‘The project has converted an existing kangaroo track to a sign-posted mountain bike trail, through the installation of 70 wayfinding bollards constructed from recyclable plastic along the 12 kilometre trail.

‘‘Deni is already known as an adventure sports hub, and these trails offer a new local attraction.

‘‘To complement the opening, we are also offering free mountain bike hire through the Visitor Information Centre in George Street, which I am sure will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,’’ Cr Brennan said.

The trail has already earned positive reviews from the nation’s fastest growing adventure community, We Are Explorers, whose website showcases the best adventurous experiences from across Australia and New Zealand.
