The possibilities were discussed this month at a meeting between members of the Deniliquin Community Garden group, which is a committee of Edward River Council, and council’s manager of environmental services Julie Rogers.
Community Garden member Suzy Keys said a focused plan for the gardens is timely, with the garden situated along a new walking trail being developed by council.
The area surrounding the garden is also undergoing a makeover, with significant upgrades to Scotts Park and the adjacent water tower soon to be covered by a vibrant mural.
‘‘By developing a master plan, the gardens could attract more funding to develop the site further, which all agreed was a great idea,’’ Ms Keys said.
‘‘Julie left us a poster created by the City of Sydney, which lists the Ten Commandments for community gardens and will be revisited in May during her next visit.
‘‘We will go forward with a master plan as suggested and have nominated Wendy Johnston to act as the group’s liaison officer to work with council.’’
Ms Keys said in the meantime, members are busy with winter preparation. It includes developing a new, warmer place to meet.
‘‘Two members recently attended the Tiny House Festival in Bendigo to gather ideas on how to transform one shipping container on the site into a warm, or cool, office and gathering place.
‘‘One container will be emptied, stripped, cleaned and painted using leftover paint from the council’s resource recovery centre.
‘‘Several rolls of red carpet from the White Lion Hotel were gratefully received and will be recycled as weed suppressants in the composting and potting area, while the best of it will go into the office container.
‘‘We are doing a lot with the garden and everyone is busy experimenting and planting to create a beautiful spot in their plots.’’
The Community Garden is located in Whitelock St, behind the Deniliquin Swim Centre.
When the garden gates are open, members of the public are welcome to come in and explore. Members are usually there from 10am Sundays, and at various other times.
Potential new members are advised to visit and pick up a copy of the garden policies and constitution before joining. The annual fee is $30. For more information, contact Jan Renwick on 0418663948.
