The starting gun was fired just after 10am and participants made the 1.5km trek around Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake together dressed in a sea of red.
Shepparton race director Kerry Connolly said it was great to see people dressed up to help raise money and awareness for the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis.
‘‘For the first time running in Shepparton we’ve been quite overwhelmed with the support that we’ve had,’’ Ms Connolly said.
Her grandson Xavier Wynn was diagnosed with the painful and progressive condition, which causes tumours to form on nerve cells, including the brain and spine.
Ms Connolly said Xavier had enjoyed the lead-up to the event.
‘‘He’s loving it, he’s been counting down the days to today,’’ she said.
Xavier’s mother Karla Williams said the community support had been amazing.
‘‘This is bigger than I ever expected and it’s been great to see everyone get dressed up for a good cause and so many have braved the undies which is great,’’ Ms Williams said.
Participants finished off their venture with a bite to eat at the The Carrington.
‘‘There’s a few people here who have their own connection to the Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia, so we just wanted to take the time to say thank you,’’ Ms Connolly said.
