Goulburn Murray Cricket’s A-grade semi-final weekend is upon us with a pair of intriguing knockout clashes.
League-leading Kyabram Fire Brigade will have to travel to opposition turf to take on Moama, but riding an eight-game winning streak will hit the contest brimming with confidence.
The Flames have not lost since a shock round five defeat to Cooma, excelling with bat and ball to dominate the competition.
Plenty of their succes has stemmed from all-rounder duo Marx De Villiers and Dale Shaw, combining for a whopping 860 runs and 42 wickets this campaign.
Taking down the Flames means snuffing out their elite history of dominance, the side having made the past five A-grade grand finals and won three of them.
But Moama, which surged into the top four at the final hurdle last weekend with a crushing outright result against Echuca South, has plenty of talent of its own.
Alistair McCann (356 runs and 15 wickets), Anthony McMahon (301 and 16) and Jordan McGregor (389 and 13) are all game-changers and will need to click simultaneously to beat Fire Brigade.
The Flames smashed a staggering 6-439 from their 80 overs when the sides met in round six, Shaw (191), Jayden Rosin (106 not out) and Mick Mattingly (5-35) all having days to remember.
●The other contest is a mouth-watering showdown between Tongala and Rochester, the two loaded sides desperate to make the decider for different reasons.
The Blues were knocked off at this same stage last season by Rochester United and will be keen to make amends, while Rochester is out to earn redemption after last season’s grand final loss to Fire Brigade.
Rochester’s Dylan Cuttriss is on fire this campaign after 33 wickets at 11.3, but he has found plenty of support, Vib Yadav among those impressing.
For the Blues, captain Darin Ohlsen (292 runs and 29 wickets), Jamie Garde (342 runs) and Daniel Coombs (395 runs) have been the standouts in a strong season.
Tongala had an impressive win when the sides met in round 11, rolling its opposition for 118 to defend a total of 140.
●At the time of printing, Echuca’s appeal against Echuca South for fielding an ineligible player in its game against Moama had not been heard. If successful, Echuca would replace Moama in the top four and face Kyabram Fire Brigade in its place.
