Have a hit at badminton

By Deniliquin Pastoral Times

Deniliquin Badminton Club will be running practice nights throughout January in preparation for their summer competition, starting on Monday.

The club will host weekly sessions every Monday night at the Deniliquin Stadium until the opening round of their competition on Monday, February 4.

Club president Scott Fullerton is hopeful of seeing some new faces at the club in 2019.

‘‘We have about 40 players who play regularly on a Monday night,’’ he said.

‘‘The practice nights are a great opportunity to give badminton a try.

‘‘We encourage all ages to come down and play, but would particularly love to get more younger members.

‘‘It’s suited for all weather being indoors and the club can supply gear during the practice nights.

‘‘We also have some players compete in the Victorian Veterans competitions for players 35 and over.

‘‘These are played on weekends throughout the year and we usually team-up with players from Echuca.

‘‘But we’re hopeful of having enough players to compete as a stand-alone Deni team.’’

Deniliquin Badminton Club host three competitions each year, with two 10-week competitions and a smaller round robin play-off as well.

‘‘We also try to organise coaching nights with coaches from Badminton Victoria,’’ Fullerton said.

‘‘Just like any club we also have social functions and just have a lot of fun.

‘‘I joined the club about four years ago.

‘‘I played squash but due to shoulder injuries had to stop playing.

‘‘I tried badminton and have played ever since. It’s been great because it’s a fast moving sport with a lower impact to the body.’’

To give badminton a try head out to the Deniliquin Stadium at 7pm on Monday.
