Deniliquin RSL Bowling Club’s Division Three have staged a massive comeback in Campaspe Valley Bowls winning their way to finals with a thrilling one shot victory away from home against ladder leader Rochester on Saturday.
RSL won on two of the three rinks which was enough to edge them in the front 70 to 69, sneaking in front of Deniliquin Bowling Club on the ladder to claim fourth spot.
Glenn Thomson (s), Brian Clancy, Cheryl Bradley and Frank Daniels led from the very first end and were able to keep their lead for the entire game coming home with an 11 shot win.
Final score, RSL 26 to Rochester 15.
Ron Marchetti (s) with Don Pearson, Jim Rhook and Craig Taylor held the lead for the first three ends but Rochester took control of the game.
On the 25th end RSL picked up seven shots to put the division up by two shots overall but it was the home side that went on to win by 11 shots.
Final score, Rochester 29 to RSL 18.
This put pressure on Bruce Clancy’s team of Alan Hodges, Chris Frampton and Tim Dover as RSL needed to maintain their overall slender lead.
With RSL two shots up overall Rochester were holding shot on the last end but RSL declared the end on the last bowl to get them over the line by one shot overall.
Final score, RSL 26 to Rochester 25.
Division Three have forced their way into the top four and finals with one shot victories for the last two rounds.
RSL will travel to Tongala to face Echuca in an elimination final on Saturday.
RSL’s Division One were defeated by 26 shots in the round 14 catch-up game.
Rochester proved too strong at home, winning on two rinks and finishing a draw on the other to claim the overall win 81 to 55.
Terry Taylor (s), Peter Liefting, John Wilson and Conway Bovell were only able to match Rochester until the fifth end when they were level on four shots each.
Rochester pulled away and went on to win by 13 shots.
Final score, Rochester 28 to RSL 15.
Daryl Weymouth (s) with Lyn Hardcastle, Jenny Tonta and Larry Seely also went down by 13 shots.
RSL led for the first six ends but Rochester took the lead and bowled consistently to win.
Finals score, Rochester 27 to RSL 14.
Ken Wellard and his team of Tony King, Chris Taylor and Tony Tonta had a great game and led for 24 ends.
They were three shots up until Rochester picked up three on the last end to force a draw.
Final score, RSL 26 to Rochester 26.
This was the end of what was a tough season for Division One, finishing on the bottom of the ladder with just two wins for the year.
RSL’s Division Five were forced to forfeit to Elmore due to a lack of players this week.
The forfeit saw RSL lose top spot on the ladder, finishing the year second behind Moama Red.
RSL will have a chance to win their way straight through to the grand final when they face Moama Red at Lockington on Saturday.
Finishing in the top two however has given RSL a double chance in finals, with a loss seeing them face the winner of the clash between Moama Green and Elmore.
