Marshall’s Port Adelaide recorded a hard-fought 16 point victory over Carlton at Adelaide Oval on Saturday to have his side sit third on the ladder after two rounds.
A free flowing end-to-end opening to the game saw the Power hold a 19 point lead at the main break.
The heavens opened at the start of the second half and it was Carlton which enjoyed the change in weather conditions, claiming the lead for a few minutes in the third term.
But Port Adelaide stood up in the big moments in the fourth quarter, with two Steven Motlop goals giving the home side some much needed breathing space on their way to victory.
Final score, Port Adelaide 13.10 (88) to Carlton 11.6 (72).
Power ruckman Scott Lycett was best on ground collecting 25 possessions, 34 hitouts and 10 clearances, while Tom Rockliff finished with 37 possessions and 12 clearances.
Motlop and Brad Ebert each booted three goal while former captain Travis Boak was also solid with 33 disposals.
It was a quiet game for Marshall, collecting seven disposals and laying three tackles, with the 198cm forward unable to hit the scoreboard.
Port Adelaide will have a tough test in round three, flying up to Brisbane to take on a red-hot Lions outfit at the Gabba on Saturday night.
