Mathoura shooters rue misses

Mathoura’s A grade netballers were left ruing what might have been against Katamatite on Saturday.

The Timbercutters were a victim of failing to capitalise on their opportunities against the Tigers as they fell by three goals in the Picola & District League round two clash.

Despite outstanding efforts at the defensive end, it was in attack where Mathoura undid all of their hard work.

As the final whistle was blown, the home side had missed 30 shots, a figure which didn’t replicate the team’s performance, according to president Melyssa Banks.

‘‘It just wasn’t our day under the ring,’’ she said.

‘‘The girls did extremely well to create opportunities, but we just let ourselves down with our shooting.’’

Despite the devastating loss, all of the signs are pointing in the right direction following the opening game of the season.

‘‘Defensively the girls were outstanding. The pressure they applied on the ball was great, Katamatite didn’t have much time and space,’’ Banks said.

The off-season saw big changes at Mathoura as several players made the step up from B grade to the top level.

‘‘The team is still going through a bit of a teething period,’’ Banks said.

‘‘Rohan (Starkey) is an excellent coach and he has got the girls playing an exciting style. Once they’ve jelled I think they will give a lot of teams some trouble.’’

Final score, Katamatite 37 to Mathoura 34.
