The 12 year-old claimed the Level 6 Tumbling Male title at this month’s Victorian Championships at Geelong Arena.
The Palmer’s Gym Bendigo member managed an impressive score of 79.200 to defeat fellow Palmer’s member Harry Johnson on 77.500.
Nick, who also trains locally at Flipstars Deni, said he was ecstatic when the final scores came through.
‘‘I was pretty excited when I found out I had won,’’ he said.
‘‘I’ve been training pretty hard since having a break over Christmas so I’m very happy with how I went.
‘‘I’ve won state championships in Level 4, 5 and now 6.
‘‘Harry and I train together at Palmer’s and he’s always been that step ahead of me.
‘‘There’s healthy competition between us and it was a big moment for me to be able to beat him.
‘‘I’ve seen Harry as a bit of inspiration to do better with my gymnastics.’’
The state championship win was just the start of an exciting week for Nick, with the young tumbler also being selected for the Victorian state team to compete at the Australian Gymnastics Championships.
The Championships will see about 1500 gymnasts compete at Melbourne Arena from May 20 to June 4.
‘‘I love the challenge of competing against the best,’’ Nick said.
‘‘I’d originally thought I qualified last year after successfully recording a qualifying score, but I then found out the squad had to be chosen from a list of everyone who had recorded a qualifying score.
‘‘I found out on Wednesday that I had been picked. I’m excited for this opportunity,’’ he said.
