After suffering an 87 point drubbing at the hands of Picola & District League powerhouse Waaia, the Timbercutters’ season is at the crossroads.
Mathoura sit in 10th position on the ladder, one game behind eighth placed Jerilderie and Robinson is demanding his playing group close the gap between their best and worst.
‘‘We knew it was always going to be tough against one of the league’s best teams,’’ he said.
‘‘But this performance showed we are not where we should be as a team. Our game style is not clicking in the way we would have hoped.
‘‘On too many occasions, we’re making fundamental errors and all good teams are going to punish you.
‘‘We’ve put the onus on each individual to take ownership of their weaknesses to help this group move forward.’’
While Robinson is well aware several of his players are still taking their first steps into senior football, he believes they still have more to offer.
‘‘Unfortunately, senior football isn’t meant to be easy,’’ he said.
‘‘The boys have come a long way but there is still plenty for them to learn. Having these sorts of discussions can either make or break a group.
‘‘Already we’ve seen a strong response in terms of what was said. I was pleased with how mature everyone was.
‘‘If we can click as a group there is no doubting we can claim some big scalps in the back half of the season.’’
Mathoura will have the opportunity to display their on field response when they welcome Deniliquin Rovers on Saturday.
If they manage to secure the four points, it would go a long way to helping keep their finals dream alive.
‘‘As we say on a weekly basis, we want to see an even contribution,’’ Robinson said.
‘‘There will be a bit more pressure on our midfield to perform because they’ll have to nullify Deni’s contested ball ability.
‘‘I just want to see us attack the footy and take care of one another.’’
