Duo duels, and Hill Top wins

By Tatura Guardian

Hill Top leapfrogged East Shepparton into the top half of the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division table after overcoming Daniel Nichols’ side 16-95 to 2-80.

The win gave the Hillbillies a five-point advantage on the ladder, narrowly securing their position as the duo fights it out.

On Saturday Hill Top was clearly the superior side and Nichols was the only East skip to prevail as he finished one shot ahead of Jock Hicks.

Murray Stark and his team of Dennis McHarry (third), Gary Mansfield (second) and John Flanagan (lead) were sensational in knocking off East’s Ashley Lawlor 24-18.

Garry Russell and Allan Hueston fought out an entertaining battle with Russell narrowly prevailing by two shots, while Hill Top’s Jeff McNaughton secured the biggest win of the day.

He was able to see off Geoff Franze by eight shots to help cement the win and add valuable shot difference to the overall tally.

In division two Tatura kept Mooroopna Golf winless thanks to John Attwood’s spectacular form.

Joined by Nicolas Tziros, Dorothy Best and Robert Bordett, Attwood’s rink gathered 41 shots to win by a margin of 22 against Graeme Barber.

Peter Le Sueur, Nick Boyd and Brendon Boyd all pitched in for the 18-123 to 0-74 triumph.

In division three, Hill Top ensured it would be in the top four during the Christmas break after an away win against East Shepparton.

The Hillbillies prevailed 13-100 to 5-85 with Ken Parks the only Hill Top skip to win his rink.

But Parks won in a big way against Kevin Cox, while team mate Jeff Trevaskis and East’s David Downs drew.

Euroa was too good for Hill Top in division four despite Hillbilly Ray Flett putting in a strong effort against Brian Diffey.

Hill Top put in a fine performance at East Shepparton to take out its division six encounter 14-82 to 2-52 while Tatura’s short trip to Mooroopna Golf also proved fruitful with a 22-shot win.

In division seven Hill Top went down to Kyabram, unable to win a rink in the 20-shot loss.
