But questions always lingered over the 35-year-old's fitness after he missed England's entire home summer after undergoing knee surgery in March.
Wood bowled just 11 overs in England's two-day defeat in Perth, before suffering soreness in that same knee and missing the second Test at the Gabba.
England had hoped he would be able to recover and play again later in the series, before those plans were abandoned on Tuesday.
Other questions also linger over the tourists' attack for Adelaide.
Brydon Carse's bowling was labelled as "third-grade standard" by Mark Waugh in Fox Cricket's commentary at the Gabba, before the speedster finished with 4-152.
Jofra Archer's fitness was also questioned in the lead up to the series, but he at least managed to play through the first two Tests unchanged.
Players at least have a nine-day gap between Brisbane and Adelaide, but there are far tighter turnarounds between the third, fourth and fifth Tests.
That could now place a strain on England's bowlers, as the tourists look to win an Ashes series from 2-0 down for the first time in their history.
England's selectors have added Matthew Fisher to their Test squad for the rest of the summer, after taking 0-105 against Australia A for the England Lions last weekend.
Josh Tongue is a chance to be called into the side for Adelaide, while Matthew Potts is also still in the squad.
