THE man arrested over the stabbing in Echuca has been charged with serious drug offences.

Police and Ambulance Victoria were called to a Rose St property at 8.15am Sunday where they found a 42-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his upper body and assault-related injuries to his face.

He was flown to The Alfred hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police arrested Waylon Walsh, who was later charged with trafficking heroin and methamphetamine.

"He has not been charged with any offences related to stabbing but charges are pending," Detective Senior Constable Peter Colliver of Echuca Criminal Investigation Unit said.

"It is an ongoing investigation."

The 35-year-old man was remanded in custody overnight before appearing in Bendigo Magistrates on Monday.
