EVERYONE agrees it’s been a long time coming. But, by golly, has the wait been worth it.
Last Wednesday around 100 people gathered to mark the official opening of Champions Super IGA Heathcote. The only supermarket in town, its size has more than doubled. And with it, there is a wonderful new selection of food, beverages and household items.
Throughout the morning, customers were treated to complimentary snags, cooked by the ever faithful Heathcote Lions Club.
At 11.30 am, chief executive Michael Zervakis addressed customers, curious onlookers and staff.
“Staff have had to work in difficult conditions for a long time,” he said. “There have been 38-degree days without air-conditioning — to say it's been arduous at times is an understatement. I'd like to thank everyone for their understanding.
“I'd also like to thank our customers for sticking with us.”
He added, "This is the first store with our new brand, 'Champions Fresh Market'. It's been a big vision and has taken a long time to create. But we got there. Thank you to our builders, the Insitu group, and to all of our contractors and suppliers.
“I would also like to recognise our original builder, Brendan Carboon, who sadly passed away during the build. I would like to dedicate the opening to his memory.”
