Homeless man in court for Melbourne rape

By AAP Newswire

A homeless man accused of raping a woman while she walked a friend's dog in a Melbourne park will remain behind bars after briefly appearing in court.

A fidgety Tyler Skerry appeared in Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Tuesday dressed in a grey jumper, and looked around the room during the hearing.

The 21-year-old is accused of rape and false imprisonment over the attack on a 32-year-old woman at Mayer Park in Thornbury on Saturday night.

The woman was able to fight-off her attacker and flag down a passing car to escape.

Skerry was also charged with theft after allegedly stealing his victim's $750 phone.

He did not apply for bail.

The prosecution were granted more time to provide a brief to the court so that forensic exhibits can be tendered.

Forensic DNA evidence and CCTV footage will form part of the case against Skerry, Magistrate Johanna Metcalf was told.

The brief of evidence will be tendered to the court in December.

Skerry will next appear in court via video link for a committal mention in January.
