COVID case count climbing for Tasmania

Tasmania has 44 new cases of COVID-19 as the state prepares for a number of new arrivals in connection with the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Figures released on Sunday show the new infections takes the number of active coronavirus cases in the state to 160.

Eighty-six of the patients are managing their care at home, authorities say.

Crew members competing in the yacht race tested negative ahead of Sunday's Sydney start and must undergo testing again on arrival in Hobart.

There was a public health alert at the Royal Hobart Hospital on Saturday after a staff member tested positive.

Authorities insist all appropriate precautionary measures were in place.

"All employees at the RHH have received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccination," a statement said.

"These factors significantly minimise the risk of exposure and transmission."

Tasmania opened its borders to states and territories considered of risk, on December 15, when the island state had zero COVID cases.
