Saber Poll Dorset sheep stud at Deniliquin will offer 95 Lambplan tested rams for sale on-property today.
The third annual ram sale will be held at 12.30pm with inspections open from 11.30am and a light lunch provided prior to sales.
Saber’s Linda Fawns said the stud was founded in 1958 and has been breeding flock rams ever since with this year marking 61 years of breeding rams on the property.
‘‘Steve and I took over the management of the stud in 2011 from Steve’s father Rod who remains involved with the stud as a mentor,’’ she said.
‘‘The stud has continued to invest heavily in genetics and we are pleased with the early growth, quick maturing lambs and muscling being seen in their flock while maintaining good structure and confirmation.
‘‘We continue to be members of Meat Elite Australia, a collaborative group of Poll Dorset breeders from across Australia and are committed to giving clients a genetic edge with sires when producing prime lambs for the sheep meat industry,’’ Mrs Fawns said.
Meat Elite genetics deliver a 21 per cent faster genetic improvement then the average for terminal sire groups. Meat Elite has a strong involvement with sheep CRC through research projects.
‘‘Through the programs that we are involved with, our aim is to be able to assist our clients with their own breeding objectives by providing quality rams that are objectively measured and can improve your operation’s productivity and importantly profitability.’’
Mrs Fawns said this season has seen some much needed rain over the winter months albeit not enough within the catchment, however what their property has received has provided the opportunity to finish off the rams without any supplementary feeding.
And while they are thankful that lamb prices remain strong, Mrs Fawns acknowledged the coming spring and summer seasons may be again dry and tough on many.
‘‘This year we have seen record prices again for lambs, seeing producers rewarded for feeding lambs in these conditions,’’ she said.
‘‘We hope the season ahead is kind to all of us and the drought breaks sooner rather than later, providing long needed relief for so many of our fellow breeders and farmers.’’
The sale is located at Morvah Park, 1224 Moonee Swamp Rd, Deniliquin.
