The project is intended to create a more accessible and inviting environment while raising the profile of the Edward River to tourists and locals alike.
Works will include upgrading the physical and visual connection between the river and the town centre.
The works will be completed by Deniliquin company B Green Constructions.
Edward River Council Mayor Norm Brennan said the timing has been coordinated to limit disruption to retail activity, parking and recreational activity on the river during the holiday period. He said the project may take up to five months to complete.
‘‘The Edward River is a wonderful natural asset and already provides so much value for locals and visitors.
‘‘As a council we want to build on these existing strengths and ensure that the river is as accessible and well presented as possible.
‘‘The aim of the project is to improve the connection between the riverfront and the CBD, create additional reasons for tourists and people travelling through to stop and enjoy our town and to provide additional access points to the river.’’
Highlights of the project include the upgrade of car parking and river access with a focus on the area behind Central IGA and the car park at the ‘Ute on the Pole’.
A floating pontoon will be added on the river behind this area, and improved seating and resting areas will be installed between the Crossing Café and river.
There will also be a new ramp for pedestrians from the top of the bank down to the Beach to Beach Walk, sealing of the pathway along the top of the levee, an additional pathway connecting the levee pathway to George St, general landscaping and tree planting.
