Hard working volunteers were disgusted to arrive at the showgrounds on Saturday morning to find several patches of damaged grass where it appears circlework has been conducted.
It comes less than two weeks after steel mesh livestock yard panels were removed from the showgrounds.
Deniliquin Pastoral & Agricultural Society president Graham Doncon said while there is some hope the damage to the grounds can be rectified in time for the March 7-9 event, it is disheartening to have to do so year after year.
‘‘This kind of thing happens most years, and we just don’t know why,” Mr Doncon said.
‘‘Society members have been down here almost every day for months getting the grounds ready for the Deni Show.
‘‘We were down here on Friday, and then returned to this on Saturday.
‘‘There are three spots where we’ve found burn out tracks.
‘‘We don’t know if they were down here just to cause damage, or maybe if they were chasing the kangaroos that come out onto the grass at dusk in their car.’’
Mr Doncon said the burn out marks were so noticeable because society members and other helpers have been relentlessly watering the grounds in preparation for the big event.
In some cases, new grass was transplanted to make sure it was green and inviting for showgoers.
He said luckily, the grass used at the showgrounds does put down roots and spread quite easily.
He is hopeful the burnout marks will be almost invisible come show day.
