Edward River Council will continue to monitor the river banks to ensure others are not put up in their place.
Council general manager Adam McSwain said it is designed to ‘‘keep residents safe’’.
Mr McSwain said safety concerns were raised by staff members, and that the decision was made based on injury statistics provided by other council areas.
‘‘As the Crown Land manager responsible for the area along the Edward River, council can be liable if any accidents were to occur,’’ Mr McSwain said.
‘‘As we are aware of a number of these rope swings, we need to put in place steps to remove them where possible.
‘‘We will remove the swings and put up some signs to remind people about safety swimming in rivers and waterways.
‘‘We want to be completely transparent and open about our communication with residents.’’
Mr McSwain said the varying levels of the Edward River, which will soon go through a ‘drawn down’ process, makes the removal of these swings a safety priority.
‘‘We certainly understand that young people in particular like using the rope swings, however we need to ensure community safety.
‘‘There have certainly been instances where accidents have occurred as a result of rope swings and councils have been held liable.”
‘‘When the river height is changing as much as it is, it (jumping in the river from a height) is too unpredictable and dangerous.’’
