The NSW Education Standards Authority board made the announcement last week, amid growing fears Year 12 students may have to repeat their final year depending on the amount of time the Coronavirus restrictions are in place.
While advice is yet to be given about exam schedules, the department has said assessments and learning would continue.
Principals or system authorities have been given the power to make individual decisions about school-based assessments, including on the number of assessments, the tasks required to complete them and weighting of formal assessments.
Deniliquin High School Year 12 student Zach King said while the new approach to learning is a challenge, students are being provided with plenty of support to ensure they are learning what they need to for the HSC.
‘‘Although Coronavirus has restricted a lot of face to face learning with teachers, the school has sent home additional learning packs and given us a number of online platforms to help aid us in our studies,’’ he said.
‘‘I am currently studying at home and have been coping with the workload thanks to the support of my teachers who are constantly touching base with us and making sure that we get all the help required to get through this year.
‘‘I’m glad the HSC is going ahead, as we Year 12 students and our teachers have been working hard to complete our last year of schooling.
‘‘I believe with all the support the school is offering, myself and other students will be able to complete our HSC with no worries.’’
Fellow Deni High HSC student Georgina Mildren said she’s also been reassured by the support from the school while she continues her studies outside the classroom.
‘‘The level of support we’ve already received from the school has been great,’’ she said.
‘‘They’ve made it very clear that our wellbeing is priority and have made resources available to us to help further our studies.
‘‘Year 12 attended a virtual year meeting on Friday morning where each faculty provided us with support and information as well as answering any questions we had.’’
The NESA COVID-19 Response Committee is currently formulating responses and advice for students who have work placements for vocational education and training subjects, working on a group drama, dance or music performance and students who are completing projects and major works.
