Luckily, Deniliquin’s newest police officers had already forged a friendship at the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn before coincidentally being assigned to the same station after graduation.
Probationary Constables Blake Shorrock and Kira Steward both started their first job in the NSW Police Force at Deniliquin on Monday.
They are among seven new graduates posted to the Murray River Police District starting this week.
They will be based at Deniliquin for at least the next three years.
Prob Const Shorrock is originally from Goulburn and said he’s keen to explore his new life in Deniliquin while pursuing his dream job.
‘‘Joining the Police Force was always something I wanted to do, but after school I went out and got a bit of life experience before signing up,’’ the 23 year-old said.
‘‘I lived in England for two years, and put my application in when I got home. I started at the academy last August.
‘‘While coming to Deniliquin was thrown at me, I’m pretty happy to be here.
‘‘I made the move last week and it was a really nice drive in to town.’’
Prob Const Steward is from the Wollongong area, and said she has also been impressed with what she has seen on her very first visit to Deniliquin.
She believes starting her career in a smaller area will allow her to hone her skills much quicker than if she was given a city posting.
‘‘I’m told that in areas like this you are able to learn a lot more, and a lot quicker,’’ the 21 year-old said.
‘‘I have never been to Deni before and it’s a nice small town from what I can see.
‘‘I’m excited to get out there.
‘‘It does make it a lot easier to see a friendly face while I am here, especially being so far away from home.’’
Prob Const Steward said it was a desire to help others that led her to the NSW Police Force, and the career opportunities.
‘‘I’ve always wanted to help the community, and to do some good,’’ she said.
‘‘The Police Force also offers a lot of opportunities to branch off, and to help even more people.’’
