This includes ‘free’ camping at Willoughby’s Beach, Benarca, Edward River Bridge and Swifts Creek camping grounds.
All sites are still promoted on the organisation’s website as free, with the $6 booking fee not revealed until after clicking the ‘book now’ button.
NPWS said the booking system is in line with COVID-19 regulations that it must keep a register of all visitors to the park.
‘‘The fee contributes to the administration costs of developing an online booking system for locations that previously operated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.,’’ a spokesperson said.
‘‘This new booking system will enable more people to enjoy the outdoors safely by providing a method of managing visitor numbers.
‘‘The booking fee covers costs associated with managing bookings and preparing campgrounds to operate under COVID-19 restrictions.
‘‘The fee also discourages visitors from booking more sites than they require, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy camping in national parks at a time when demand for camping is very high.’’
Camping is subject to restrictions relating to the number of camping sites and length of stay.
The service says arrangements for campgrounds that did not require booking before the COVID-19 crisis will be reviewed once the health emergency passes.
Toilet facilities are generally open and campers are encouraged to maintain good hygiene and take their own sanitation products.
Edward River Council Mayor Norm Brennan said he was unaware of the fee until contacted by the Pastoral Times this week.
He said while it may be frustrating for those who regularly camp in affected areas, he does not believe it will significantly impact on people visiting the region.
‘‘The question is, is $6 going to deter many people from coming to Deniliquin?’’ he asked.
‘‘I personally don’t think it is a great impost.’’
