Echuca Regional Health was appointed to oversee the ‘headspace’ mental health centre on July 2, following a tender process.
ERH chief executive Nick Bush said his team would consult heavily with district youth to develop and deliver the facility they want, in line with the headspace model to provide a tailored service at each location.
Those aged between 12 and 25 are being asked to complete a survey, so ERH can gain a better understanding of what’s working well in the region, and what needs to be improved, in order to support the mental health of youth.
‘‘Young people will help determine key features of the centre’s establishment, such as location and importantly how to access services,’’ Mr Bush said.
‘‘We’re excited to move into the next phase and encourage young passionate people to get involved.’’
How quickly headspace will get up and running depends on the feedback received by ERH.
Headspace chief executive Jason Trethowan said he looked forward to seeing the new centre open.
‘‘We know with the right support we can help young people get through tough times and get back on track,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s been a particularly tough time for young people recently and it’s great that headspace, a service trusted by young people, will be able to provide further support to the local community.’’
The youth survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/headpsace.
Until the centre opens, people in need are encouraged to speak to their local GP.
The Australian Government organisation Health Direct says suicide is the leading cause of death among young Australians.
It said about 350 young people aged 15 to 24 take their own lives every year, and that for every youth suicide, there are 100 to 200 more attempts.
